As people add more meat and dairy products to their diet, serious health problems can develop, a new study says.

Choosing a health insurance provider can be a daunting task. Although you know you will be happy you have coverage when you need it, insurance is one of those things we all would rather not have to think about.

It is important to choose carefully so that when the need for coverage does arise (and yes, it always does) you will be prepared. Here are some of the things to consider when deciding which provider and plan are right for you and your family.

Company Health Insurance

Your workplace may offer health insurance, and they will generally deal with one provider. This limits your options, but can save you money since these are group plans. This also simplifies the process of setting up your plan since configuration and management of your coverage can often be completed and/or assisted on site at your workplace through your HR department.

But again, there are disadvantages of company health insurance. Although it does hold the benefit of saving you money, you might not get the kind of coverage that matches the medical situation of you and your family.

Individual and Group Health Insurance

Most companies offer individual plans and group plans, and you need not go through your workplace to get coverage. Again, you may save monthly by going through your workplace's group plan, but is that worth it if the plan does not give you the coverage you really want or need?

Before or during open enrollment at work, do some research online and compare what is offered by plans that you can get on your own. You may be surprised that you can get affordable coverage that is more appropriate for your family's health circumstances.

What to Consider

When you consider a health insurance provider, consider some of the following questions. Make a list of the answers and compare, and then choose a provider whose answers are best for your particular priorities.

1. How much are monthly premiums? Are these fixed or fluctuating?
2. What is covered: office visits, medications, minor or major surgeries?
3. What types of coverage is offered in terms of medical, dental, and vision?
4. What kind of out-of-pocket deductibles and co-payments might apply?
5. Will you be able to choose your own doctor? If limited to a network, how big?
6. Is an HSA (health savings account) offered? What are the details, if so?
7. Will your children or spouse be covered?
8. Can you cover children without a parent being required in the plan?
9. Are short term plans available?
10. What time commitment are you locked into? When can you adjust your plan?
11. Does the provider offer online setup and management for coverage?

Putting It All Together

If you notice any other benefits offered by some companies which are not on this list, start asking the competition if they offer those benefits as well. Get organized, do some basic research, go online, make calls, and take good notes.

Finally, review your notes and compare. Follow this process and you will be sure to find affordable and comprehensive coverage to perfectly match the insurance needs of you and your family.

Physical fitness may slow Alzheimer brain atrophy (AP)

AP - Getting a lot of exercise may help slow brain shrinkage in people with early Alzheimer's disease, a preliminary study suggests. Analysis found that participants who were more physically fit had less brain shrinkage than less-fit participants. However, they didn't do significantly better on tests for mental performance.

Every time I tell people about the dangers of cow's milk, they look at me as if I am crazy. Cow's milk is not for human consumption. The cow has been called humanity's adoptive mother, even though the milk that it secretes is quite different from that of the human female.

One of the main questions I get when I tell people about the dangers of milk is:

"Don't we need milk for calcium?"

The straight answer to that question is simply, NO! I then ask them a question back.

"Where does the cow get its calcium from?"

To my surprise, usually everyone gets this answer right. If you said the grass it eats, you are right. If a cow gets the calcium from grass, why can't we get calcium from a plant source? In fact, milk is not the richest source of calcium. The richest source of calcium is sesame, which comes in at a whopping 975 mg, compared to nonfat milk coming in at a lightweight 123 mg. The second leading source of calcium is blackstrap molasses at 860 mg. There you have it, milk and dairy products are not by any means the only source of calcium.

In fact, one glass of milk (200 ml) = 100 g of almonds = 100 g of common dry beans = 500 g of broccoli. All of these foods provide the same amount of calcium as a glass of milk, 240 mg (one third of the RDA: Recommended daily allowance).

Many studies are now linking milk consumption to coronary heart disease. This is due to negative effects that certain milk components have on cholesterol levels and the cardiovascular system. There are many diseases produced or aggravated by milk.

Buttermilk, the fat in milk, is the most saturated fat in the American diet. Cheese is often 70% fat by calories. Even "low fat" 2% milk is actually 24 to 33% lutein 5% nutritional supplement as calories. Milk is a principal contributor to high cholesterol and artery-clogging atherosclerosis. Actually, 2 cups of "low fat" milk has about the same amount of saturated fat and cholesterol as 6 strips of bacon. If you consume just 2 cups (about pound) of "low fat" milk per day, in one year you will have consumed the equivalent amount of cholesterol in 2,190 strips of bacon (about 100 pounds). Imagine how much it would be if you consume 2 pounds of milk products per day like the average American. Nobody would eat that much bacon because they would know that much fat and cholesterol would not be good for their health.

Various studies have also shown that infants that have been fed cow's milk are at greater risk of insulin-dependent diabetes from childhood. This type of diabetes is called type 1. The risk is 50% greater when infants younger than 4 months are fed milk. It is said that milk produces an autoimmune allergic reaction in the beta cells of the pancreas where insulin is secreted.

In some sensitive people, milk acts as an irritant to the digestive system, producing a wide variety of disorders, such as abdominal pain, constipation, gastro duodenal ulcer, and intestinal hemorrhaging. Liberal use of milk may also cause anemia because, since it satisfies the appetite, there is a tendency not to eat enough of other foods rich in iron.

There has also been a link to milk consumption and cataracts. Galactose, one of the simple sugars that make up lactose or milk sugar, can cause the lens of the eye to become opaque.

Cow's milk is also linked to certain types of cancer.

1. Lymphoma. Studies show that those who drank two or more glasses of milk daily had a three to four times greater risk of suffering from lymphoma than those who drank less than a glass a day. This 360% greater risk indicates a strongly positive association between milk use and cancer. The fact that cow's milk can transmit the bovine leukemia virus is one of the possible explanations.

2. Ovarian cancer. Studies show that women that drank more than one glass of whole milk a day have a three times greater risk of ovarian cancer than those who never drink it. Nonfat milk does not seem to promote this type of cancer.

3. Prostate cancer. Men that drink from one to two glasses of milk a day, have a 20% greater risk than men that do not drink milk or that do so only occasionally. For those who drink two or more glasses a day, the risk is multiplied fivefold (500%).

Here are some alternatives to cow's milk:

Soymilk - this milk does not contain vitamin B12, and has less calcium than cow's milk. However, enriched soy beverages are available whose nutritional value is very similar to cow's milk.

Almond milk - this is a very pleasant and refreshing beverage that provides proteins and, unsaturated fats, and sugars that are very easy to assimilate. It contains less calcium than cow's milk.

Oat milk - this milk is very rich in fats and proteins.

The milk of each species is designed to meet the needs of its own young. Humans are the only mammals that have the capacity to consume milk from other species of mammals that is quite different in composition from that of humans.

Human milk is designed for development of the human brain. That is why human milk is richer than any other milk in monounsaturated fatty acids (such as oleic acid) and polyunsaturated fatty acids (such as linoleic acid) similar to those found in nuts and seeds.

Hospital error blamed for more infant overdoses (AP)

I usually give us both Rescue Remedy when we face something new and challenging. I took Jake back to the trailer and we both took a dose. The rest of the morning went much better.

It was a long day and the heat index was well over one hundred. Jake gave his all and was a bit sore and grouchy at the end of the day. I took a little extra time to do a short Bowen session on him to help his muscles relax. In addition to his extra probiotics and algae at dinner, I also gave him an extra dose of noni juice to help with any inflammation from the extra work. The next morning Jake was bright and ready to go. I did not need any Rescue Remedy as he was very comfortable with his new surroundings.

I recently read an article in Practical Horseman about medicating performance horses and was dismayed to see that the supplements I used at the clinic would be considered illegal. I feel we should draw a distinction between substances that help restore a horse to its natural physical, mental, and emotional state, and substances that actually increase a horse's performance beyond his normal abilities or mask pain. Since this can be quite confusing, I'll give a couple of examples.

Consider the difference between valerian and chamomile. Both have calming effects. The difference is that valerian can actual alter a horse's state beyond what is normal while chamomile could only restore a horse to its normal state of calmness. Valerian can cause a horse that is normally not very calm to become calm or even sedated. On the other hand, giving a chamomile to a horse that is normally tense or high-strung would not have much of a sedating effect. Chamomile is effective in restoring a normally calm horse to its regular state under stressful conditions such as a show.

Another example is the difference between arnica and devil's claw, both of which reduce symptoms of soreness or pain. Arnica cannot mask pain, but will help a horse recover from muscle soreness more quickly. It will not, however, allow a horse to perform beyond its actual level of fitness. In contrast, devil's claw has some medicinal components that would act in the body like a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory. When regulations allow for low levels of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents such as bute or banamine, devil's claw should be a perfectly acceptable substitute.

In these examples, we are making a distinction between nutritional supplements or homeopathic remedies and herbal supplements. Some herbs, such as valerian, kava kava, and devil's claw are medicinal and chemical in action. Even though they are natural substances and may not be harmful to the horse, using them to alter performance does violate the spirit of fair competition. On the other hand, vibrational/energetic remedies and nutritional products that do not have chemical-like constituents cannot alter performance and instead allow a horse to be his best.

Homeopathic remedies and flower essences work on a vibrational plane and cannot mask pain or cause a horse to act in a certain way. Homeopathic remedies will never show up in tests because they are not physical substances. They also do not have side effects or harm the horse in any way.

Similarly, nutritional support from natural products such as probiotics, noni juice, or aloe vera will not alter a horse's performance but can help the horse recover more quickly and be more comfortable. Stress from showing will often cause the bacterial flora of the horse's digestive tract to change, and this can cause discomfort and make a horse nervous. Probiotics are a natural way to bring back the balance and help a horse feel better. Noni and aloe vera are considered herbs but they act in a nutritional rather than medicinal way by giving the horse extra enzymes and nutrients to recover quickly from stress. Blue-green algae is a concentrated nutrient which supports overall health so can give a horse extra energy and help him focus better at home or on the road.

The best way to be successful with your performance horse is to train him carefully, give him the best nutrition, condition him to be able to withstand the rigors of competition and support him with natural products which do not mask pain or alter performance. I do not see how giving homeopathic remedies, flower essences or nutritional products interfere with the spirit of the medication rules.
